Earlier this month, Mr. Wild Dingo had a week off. Since we needed to seriously cut back on our rock star life style, we decided to take it easy that week and build a fence for Loki’s yard.
This is what Scott did:
- Designed the fence in Power Point
- Designed the post recessed panel and crown facia
- Researched finials and hardware from Victorian catalogs and ordered
- Measured for amounts of materials he would need
- Bought the wood
Ordered the finials (not yet installed)- Cut a template for the pickets and asked for my approval
- Mocked up a post design in wood for my approval
- Mulled for days over the post design heights and aesthetics
- Shopped for any extra hardware he may need, like the paint sprayer
- Installed all the post exterior facia
- Decided two post fasciae are wrong and re-installed them
- Measured spacing between each post to achieve the “divine proportion” separation on pickets.
- Developed spreadsheet for spacing between pickets and # of pickets he’d need
Tried to print out spreadsheet during precious daylight time, only to run into still unknown computer/printer communication errors- Cursed printer, HP, all their ‘kin, and decides to “wing it”
- Cut, sanded and installed all pickets
- Masked for painting
- Primed and painted the fence
- Installed the hardware and hinges
This is what I did:
- Approved designs
- Approved posts
- Approved pickets
- Approved divine proportion
- Bought the paint and primer. This was kind of a huge pain in the butt because I had to go to the store TWO times because Scott didn’t know how much paint he needed. Teaches me to marry a guy who doesn’t know what he’s doing.
- Walked and played with Loki
- Attempted to mask for painting only to have Scott grow completely frustrated with my lack of skills and did it himself
- Started to sand some pickets only to run out of time because Loki needed to go to the park to play with his friends.
- Oooo’d and Ahhh’d a lot
Glad THAT’S over. That week sure wasn’t any picnic for me.

oooohhhh! aaaaaaah!
Loki is one lucky lad…..
i took a ranger test and failed because I couldn’t pass the fence building portion.
and scott is a bit of a slacker, don’t you think?
Loki is definitely lucky to have cool parents who build pretty fences for him.
Yes, he’s a keeper. Today he said I should apply for disability. (?!) Ya. A real keeper with that sense of humor. And all this time I have been thinking he didn’t appreciate me for my disabilities…
Loki’s actually diggin’ the lush life here compared to the streets of Taiwan. he didn’t even try to jump the temporary 2 foot mesh fence we put up before this one.
supervisin is hard work, just look at all the stuff you had to approve its worth at least double points.
Didn’t both of you mock designs?
This is why that Scottyboy is a keeper. The fence is a beauty, now hopefully Loki is not a jumper.
