You Can't Always Get What You Want

You Can't Always Get What You Want

I have this rule. Remember it? No Dogs On the Bed. No seriously. I have it. But everyone knows, rules are made to be broken, right? Only somepups in this house think they can be the breaker of that rule. Loki for example has taken to pacing around our bed each night for 5 or 10 minutes hoping he'll get an invitation. I don't enjoy sleeping with dogs. Hell, I don't even enjoy sleeping with Mr. Wild Dingo. But there are some sacrifices I just have to make.

So we don't invite him up on the bed and instead tell him to go to his own bed, which is in our bedroom. He punishes us by sulking into the office and sleeping on the other bed out there.

But he's not the only one. In the late mornings, when I'm getting ready to take them for the "w-a-l-k," Juno gets so full of her floofy self she leaps onto the bed while I'm changing into my dog walking clothes. Normally, I would not allow it. But firstly, the fact that she can leap like that always makes my heart beat happily because it's a sign that her hips and back feel wonderful. And secondly, she's so damn cute when she does it, rolling around upside down or trying to hide her head under a pillow, it's impossible not to laugh, let alone make her get off the bed. So instead I play with her and laugh until it's time for her to get off, in which the rule is, she has to let me carry her off. No jumping off onto a slippery floor with her hip dysplasia. That's one rule I don't allow her to break.

"Get off the bed? Don't blow your 50-amp fuse. Remember what the Guru Mick says."

Sigh. If I try sometime, maybe I'll find, I'll get what I need.

  1. hmm try sleeping with 4 dogs on the bed, and not small dogs! I don't think I would have any luck enforcing a no dog on bed rule, although to be honest I need at least one dog on the bed at all times, to keep me warm 😉

  2. I always thought the rule was that if you allowed the rule to be broken even once, it was no longer a valid rule! 🙂

  3. Oh, I love those pics!!! They are so beautiful! Pre-Huskies, we always had a GSD, my other love! The expressions on the faces sure do let us know what they think, don't they?! Try as we might, some rules here too get broken, like the "off the bed" rule...yeah, some of the Sibes think that ones funny, especially our Wolf, the bed hugger.

Thanks for your really kind words on our blog about Canine Epilepsy.

  4. I can't imagine why you would use those red bed covers if not to make Loki look stunning when he is enjoying the pillowy comfort of your bed.

  5. Rules? What are these 'rules' of which you speak? The only rules I know of are 1) dog dinner is at 5pm sharp, no matter what natural or man-made disasters may be occurring at the appointed time, and 2) humans are allowed on the Big Dog Bed ONLY if they agree to contort their bodies in such as way as to not discomfort the dogs. At least I know who's in charge (although I'm a little fuzzier about who's on first...)

  6. Sounds like Loki needs to study Juno's joie de vivre when she jumps on the bed - or perhaps her timing - if he wants to emulate her success.
