La Haute Couture

Yes it’s what you think it is. In May, Vaud had an expo of apprentice confectioners. The theme was haute couture. Now this is my idea of good fashion.

Tidy

It’s that time of year in Switzerland. The farms roll up their balls of hey and stack them neatly in the fields. I was fascinated the first time I saw it. I still am.

Get A Room!

“Princess, avert your eyes!” I don’t know what it is, but there’s a high degree of PDA in Switzerland. Not just among teenagers. I didn’t notice the couple making out in back of the dogs until I processed the images on the computer. This was the least explicit photo of their activities. We may be [...]

Chateau Gruyères

In May Mr. Wild Dingo, a friend and I all visited Chateau Gruyères (entry to the chateau above photo) in the canton Fribourg. I expected a very long drive so I took my iphone for entertainment. About 30 minutes into the drive, I looked up and saw the beautiful rolling green hills and blue skies. ”Damn! I feel [...]

Excuse Me While I Have a WTF Moment

I love this country. If I could, or had to, I would live here forever. But every now and then, its blemishes show up.

It's So Swiss

As I was looking over the charges on the flight to London I booked yesterday, I noticed that Switzerland charged a “noise tax” but the U.K. didn’t. That’s so Swiss. I took this shot above one evening in our backyard while the dogs were rompin’ in the twilight. I think they should just call it an [...]

Someone Pinch Me

This month’s masthead is dedicated to my inability to shut my bottom jaw anytime I’m walking the villages and vineyards in Switzerland. Someone needs to pinch me because sometimes I can’t believe I live here, even if it’s only  temporary.

Playing with Fire

“Oh hey Daddy-O! It looks like lunch time!” I know what you’re all thinking Internet. That I have a screw loose. Well, that’s probably true. However, how was I supposed to know those cows were grazing behind us, 100 feet from the Lake Leman where Loki was just learning to dunk, err, I mean, swim?  Cows in Switzerland turn [...]

Swiss Clean

I’ve been spring cleaning my computer lately. In the last two weeks, I cleaned off about 90 Gigs of data and photos from my hard drive.  I told you my photo composition wasn’t great. Here’s a beautiful shot of the mountains– with a trashcan that is so prominent, it looks like it was Photoshopped. It’s [...]

Was it Something I Said?

Loki and Juno are forging new friendships and found a great hiking pal in Marley who is also an American ex-pat. We got together with Marley and his Mom for a hike in the parks and hills above Lausanne at Chalet Gobet. Ah gee! Another chalet and another set of gorgeous parks and woods to hike [...]

Rusted!

The Challenge: find something rusty. I found this rusty gate (and rusty smeared retaining wall) at the Lavaux vineyards on my Saturday bike ride. Little did I know it would serve as a metaphor for my bike riding abilities.

Ciao! Lugano!

One of the favorite places for the Swiss to getaway is Lugano, one of Ticino’s most beautiful natural features. The striking thing about it is that the  lake surrounded by the mountains right on the shoreline. The hotels are literally built into the mountain in some cases and right on the lake. I had heard about it enough to put it [...]

Now All of Switzerland Knows My Dogs are Smarter than I Am

The day started innocently enough. We stopped by the Tulip Festival again this week so I can try one more time to get a photo of Juno’s yellow eyes next to some yellow tulips.

Chateau d'Aigle: House of Vine and Wine

A few weekends ago, Mr. Wild Dingo and I visited Chateau d’Aigle, a museum of vine and wine that featured a renown collection of wine labels dating back as far as the 1800′s. Unfortunately, that exhibit was closed due to relocation, but the chateau and museum did not disappoint.

Tempting Fate

Tempting Fate: That’s what Mr. Wild Dingo calls this series of photos.

The Professional Hobbyist

On the way to Ballens. The farm on the right has lovely band of 20 or more frolicking horses. I was re-writing the About page the other day because Wild Dingo used to be a Web site that was for my consulting business and blog. I had to update the information because people still contact [...]

La Dolce Vita

Our cultural trainer and advisor recently emailed me to follow up on how we were doing.  She was pleased to hear I had started cooking and finding my creativity again. She was writing from Milan where she had taken time to appreciate ”the sweet life” and “la bella figura.” She herself had been inspired to ”refuse to live ugly”–in the [...]

Joie de Vivre

I call this crackey. The Swiss call it “joie de vivre.”

Romainmotier, Switzerland's Oldest Abby

Romainmotier, Switzerland’s oldest abby, established around 500. A 14th century bell tower faces the front of the abby. It’s a quiet Monday morning. You could hear a pin drop in the town of roughly 500 people.

To Leash or Not To Leash?

Mr. Wild Dingo and I paid a visit to the Foundation de l’Hermitage last weekend. It’s a 19th century estate with a small art collection of 800 or so paintings, mostly impressionists. There were a few Degas and some Picasso and a whole bunch of artists I have never heard of.
